Introduction

Technology has become a significant influence on everyday human life. The fashion, art and design industry has not been left out. Technology has especially lately shaped the fashion, art, and design. Given that fashion starts as an idea which is conceived by the designer and then actualized to become an object that can be seen and worn, technology has made it possible for the artists and designers to actualize their mental conceptions into tangible fashion items. With the help of technology, they can now enhance their ideas further be looking at other people’s work and the possibility of putting their vison into reality. There are times when a designer can have an idea or visons but cannot implement it because they do not have the correct manpower and tools to do so. With the help of technology this is now possible. This paper looks at how technology has impacted art, fashion and design industry and the foreseeable future of the industry.

Present Fusion of Art, Fashion and Design, and Technology

The fashion industry has become very dynamic especially with the current trends in technology. What seems fashionable and trendy in the current may and really seems oldfashioned in a few days after. The fashion industry views the world as having a finite number of
trends and therefore aims at improving on what is in existence through art and design. The dynamics in the fashion industry are similar to those in the technology. An idea comes to the mind of the fashion designer, and he or she develops and experiments the idea to create an end product using technology. With time, that idea becomes trendy and improved and then with time, it becomes archaic. Modern technology offers a wide range of possibilities which have been embraced by fashion gurus.

Anouk Wipprecht, a Dutch fashion designer, is an example of a designer who has explored the possibilities presented by current technological advancement (SNUGG, n.d.). Ms. Wipprecht using technology developed Dare Droid, a cocktail making dress. The dress offers the user a cup of juice and senses the user by the use of IR-sensor collar. In addition to this extraordinarily impressive dress, Ms. Wipprecht has gone ahead to conceive Pseudomorphs, a type of dress that paints self. Using an in-built technology, the owner of the dress can customize the color of the dress using the dress’s inbuilt technology (SNUGG, n.d.). Cornell University’s
textile nanotechnology laboratory produced dresses made of natural fibers coated with nanoparticles which allowed the dresses produce colors as a result of interaction between matter, light, and nanoparticles.

These are developments in art, fashion, and design industry that shows that technology is taking fashion industry to the whole another level. For fashion lovers, with the help of technology they can now view fashion blogs and tutorials on what to wear, how to wear it and
what not to wear. For instance, in the HI FASHION website, there are different tutorials and detailed explanations on what to wear, when and how to do it. Without this information, many people could make many fashion failures. Those who have benefited from this technology are men. Men can now look up the internet to find out many different ways of wearing different clothes. We had a hard time before but it is now simple. A person only needs to google how to wear a certain item or look up for what is trending in the fashion and art industry.

The Future of Art, Fashion, and Design

It is plausible to say that the wearable technologies are in their initial stages. Within the next three to five years, Credit Suisse has predicted that fashion industry will significantly impact the economy. The estimated impact will be more than $50 billion. In the recent past, Katty Perry was seen in a dress that flashed according to the beats of her music. Nicole Scherzinger, on the other hand, showcased a twitter dress which showed real-time tweets on her body (SNUGG, n.d.).

Many fashion companies have started programs aimed at encouraging fusion of technology and fashion to improve both technology and fashion industries. Technology strategy board, for example, has activated IC tomorrow, a program that promotes fashion gurus to create
a fashion and technology fused from scratch. Material conneXion, a fashion company in an interview, said that the future of fashion industry has much to with the technology. In the near future, wearable technologies will become imperative. The future looks so technology depended. So many fashion items that incorporate technology have been conceived and will be available in the market soon. One of the very intriguing items is The Hövding, a Swedish helmet which does not take the normal form of bicycle helmet as we know it today (SNUGG, n.d.). The experts in the fashion have noted keenly that, although it is essential for security reasons, many people do not like putting on helmets when riding a bicycle. To that end, therefore, they have conceived the hovding which takes the form of a collar and inflates itself into a helmet in case of an accident (SNUGG, n.d.). There then is the smoke dress designed by Anouk Wipprecht which will work by emitting a smoke cloud on sensing an approaching person thereby hiding the wearer. There is also the NFC ring which is designed to operate nearly everything including unlocking doors, sharing things on social media, unlocking phones and sharing pictures among others without the need for charging. There is also a possibility that in a future that is so near, shoe lovers will be ordering 3D printed shoes and gloves which a perfectly fitting (Tang, 2015). The other possibility which is likely to be a reality in the future is the smart clothes which will be solar powered and will be able to charge the wearer’s gadgets as the wearer sunbathes. Another possible development which is near to be a reality is the miracle shirts which will be able to resist stains. The shirts will be made from the blend of synthetic and natural fiber and technology. In the shoe industry, companies like Nike have already incorporated technology into their products. Nike, for example, has produced fly knit fabric and hexagonal cushioning system. Latest structural engineering is integrating high heels and dress shoes with technology (Tang, 2015).

Conclusion

The way people look at clothes has changed. The continuous advancement of technology and how fashion designers are incorporating the technology in the fashion industry is not only intriguing but also gets one thinking about what will happen next. To the fashion designer, the statement sky is the limit is becoming true. The people’s awareness of technology and the possibilities it presents has increased. This trend is quite conspicuous in the fashion industry.
